Straight Talk - Parenting a Child with ADD or ADHD

In Psalm 139:13-14, the Bible reminds us that God uniquely created each of our children: "They are uniquely and wonderfully made…” As a parent, you have also probably learned that unique parenting strategies are required for each of your children. What supports one child might not be a successful with the next child. But when faced with a diagnosis of ADD and ADHD, many parents are left with a feeling of “Now what?”

Parenting a child with ADHD or ADD looks extraordinarily different than the way one would parent a child who does not have the same struggles. These children tend to have problems executing tasks that require planning, organization, memory, time management, and flexible thinking. Ordinary coping skills and approaches to life challenges do not typically help these children find success. The key is to better understand how their brain is wired, how they process information, and how they categorize tasks and environment cues. This is the child’s Executive Function, or essentially the secretary of the brain.

Guest Speaker Shannon Thornton, M.A. L.P.C., from Chrysalis Behavioral Therapy and Counseling will share insight into how your child’s brain is uniquely wired. The more you understand, the more you are able to help build skills and manage difficulties to allow your child—and you—to be more successful. At the heart of Shannon’s message, you will find encouragement and hope, along with resources to support you and your family.
